Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, pieces from our silver collection are made of 925 Sterling Silver and 935 Argentium Silver.
All of our 9ct gold pieces are real gold. Some earrings are hollow core as larger earrings are designed to be lightweight for comfort. Other earrings are solid core. The same goes for our pendants and chains. Our 9ct rose or yellow gold pieces are imported from Italy and of exceptional quality. All our 9ct gold pieces are identified by their officials stamps (9ct/ 375).
Vermeil is the type of plating we use when applying thin layers of 9ct yellow or rose gold to a sterling silver (925) or argentium silver (935) piece. Please note that the plating used onto our silver pieces is different to our plating on our waterproof and tarnish proof pieces. Our plating is of very high quality as we apply multiple layers of plating and lastly add an anti-tarnish layer to prolong the lifespan of the plated jewellery piece.
Plated jewellery is less costly than 9ct solid gold and thus not suitable for everyday wear. If you would like to have an “everyday” jewellery piece, we recommend silver, 9ct solid gold, or our waterproof & tarnish-proof pieces for the most durability.
Plating does not last forever and will naturally wear away. In general plating lasts as long as you allow it and how you take care of the jewellery piece (see our care instructions below, also included in every parcel). Some plated pieces can last very long if they are well looked after.
To order your plated jewellery piece, please select the drop down “metal” to choose either rose gold plated or yellow gold plated.
Please note that having plated pendants loosely fitted to the chain (these pendants fall over each other when worn) will accelerate the fading of plating as friction occurs between the pendants. Having the pendants attached to the chain will minimise fading. If you would like us to rather attach the pendants, please leave us a note with your online order or select the relevant option if available.
Yes you can. You can even plate your original silver Lily Lane piece, if you would like a fresh new look for your existing silver necklace, earrings or bracelet. Please note once a piece has been plated, we are unable to restore/remove the plating back to silver. Please reach out to us for re-plating, together with a photo of your necklace, then we will get back to you ASAP with a quote.
Pricing for re-plating will be communicated via email along with the relevant courier charges.
We include a care instructions card in every parcel on how to care for your specific piece of jewellery. We include a small silver impregnated polishing cloth in each silver ordered parcel. Please only use a very soft, non abrasive cloth to gently wipe your plated jewellery, do not excessively wipe the piece as plating can be wiped away if pressing too hard on the pendants or chain.
Skin acidity levels can increase tarnishing of silver jewellery. Skin acidity levels can differ and therefore silver jewellery needs to be cleaned/wiped often.
Here are some other tips on caring for your Lily Lane piece:
* Avoid exposure to household chemicals, chlorinated water, perfume, creams, lotions, cosmetics and hairsprays as these products can accelerate tarnishing.
* If not wearing your piece, store it in an airtight plastic bag.
* Use a non-abrasive, soft cloth to polish your jewellery piece regularly. Do not use paper towels or tissue as it can scratch the metal. Use warm water and a mild ammonia and phosphate-free dishwashing soap to clean your jewellery piece. Always dry it completely.
* After wearing, wipe each piece with a soft cloth to remove any oils, make up or perspiration.
* Add your jewellery piece last as a finishing touch to your outfit!
Cleaning Tips for Silver Jewellery Cleaning (NOT PLATED PIECES)
- Line a bowl with tin foil (shiny side up)
- Add some boiling water
- Add a splash of vinegar
- Add a pinch of salt
- Add a bit of baking soda
- Add your blackened/tarnished jewellery
- Leave for 15minutes and wipe/polish the piece
Please note: This cleaning tip are not suitable for plated jewellery pieces as it could damage the piece.
We do not recommend wearing a plated piece everyday as this could cause the plating to fade away quicker. If you would like an “everyday” jewellery piece we recommend going for silver or 9ct gold instead. The plating on each piece lasts as long as you allow it. Protect your plated jewellery by removing it before exposure to water, soap, oil, perfume or lotion, cleaning products.
Your engraving will appear in the specific font chosen online as well as on your ordered jewellery piece. Please note that spacing of engraving per pendant can change with the number of characters chosen

You can, but we do not recommend it as soaps, oils, chlorine in the water and salts can induce tarnishing as well as fade plating and affect the look of your jewellery. We encourage you to remove any jewellery before a shower, swim or bath. Jewellery needs to be wiped, polished often. Our waterproof & tarnish-proof collection is more resistant to this type of wear, however it is best avoided if possible.
Oxidation is the discoloration or blackening that occurs on a piece of jewellery.
Oxidation is a natural process. Certain metals in the silver, mostly copper, interact with the environment that cause a jewellery piece to oxidize. Your jewellery piece can also oxidise when in contact with chlorinated water.
All silver will oxidize over time and under the right conditions.
The amount of oxidation that occurs on an individual piece of jewellery depends on many factors including how detailed the jewellery is combined with the habits and care of the person who wears the jewellery. Oxidation is not a manufacturer’s defect or fault.
Sterling/Argentium silver can oxidize, turn black or discolor due to:
- An individual’s body acid. Your jewellery may be at a higher or earlier risk if you enjoy drinking or eating foods that are high in acid like; coffee, wine, fruit juices, oranges, tomatoes, vinegar, pickles, etc.
- Prescription drugs. Certain medications like anti-depressants, sulfa drugs, some antibiotics or even multivitamins can interact with or change a person’s body chemistry.
- Cleaning products and chemicals. Direct contact with bleach, ammonia, acid, alcohol, chlorine, etc. will cause a chemical reaction to the metals of jewellery.
- Menopause. Woman in menopause can experience body chemistry and hormonal changes that make oxidation more possible while their body adjusting.
- Extremely moist skin. Some people can have physiological or metabolic states that stimulate excess moisture and perspiration (sweat) even without purposeful exercising. Especially moist skin can interact with the 7.5% metals with a green skin staining.
